A new fare hike by the New York City MTA went into effect on Sunday March 2, 2008. With the new bonus of 15% it is very easy for your MetroCard to have annoying uneven balances when you add funds to your card.
Use this handy calculator to put an even balance on your card. The MTA stands to make millions on discarded MetroCards with spare change balances left on them.
The basic Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard allows you one ride for $2. The bonus for the pay-per-ride MetroCard will be 15-percent, which is added automatically with the purchase or addition of $7 or more. A $7 card with the bonus will actually have $8.05 value, equaling 4 rides but will have a remaining balance of $0.05. The bonus makes individual rides cost $1.74 each (15% discount). Up to 4 people can ride together on a single Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard. If multiple people are riding together on the same MetroCard the first person can swipe the card through the necessary number of times and other riders can walk through the turnstile following them. Pay-per-ride MetroCards are refillable.
